On September 14, 2007 Fr Gonzales celebrated a Missa Cantata in honor of His Holiness’ Motu Propio Summorum Pontificum. He celebrates the usus antiquor regularly. Why would you be wearing a manipole? What on heaven's name is the purpose of this ridiculous vestment? Jesus never used one, the Apostles never did and they went out 40 years ago. Why bring this back? Whatever connection does it have to the celebration of the Eucharist? I say it no connection, and I've followed the ecclesiastical history of this most stupid piece of liturgical dress. Jason M

Too bad a little bit of velcro could not be employed in this instance!
To prevent malfunctions, dresss/bridal shops often sell an adhesive that will temporarily keep clothing in place. Some people use duct tape (comes in all colors)for this sort of thing. A little piece can be folded in half so it becomes sticky on both sides. It's easy to remove when no longer needed.

The maniple may be likened to the towel with which Jesus gird himself and dried the apostle's feet, having come to us through the ages from this great event in the mandatum.

I hope to purchase a couple of gothic vestments this week. I also priced out some economical cassocks.
I believe this is one aspect of the extraordinary influencing the ordinary. We priests, simply by celebrating both usages of the Latin rite, will unconsciously incorporate the sublime reverence of the older form. This is a good and holy thing.
The feedback which I have gotten from Friday evening's Mass all speak of the reverence, sacred silence, devotion, and spiritual attitude of the congregation and the sacred ministers and choir.
The ladies of the choirs at the regularly scheduled Novus Ordo wore their mantillas today. Several received Holy Communion kneeling after Mass,

Usually maniples are kept in place with a small safety pin.
Years ago at the time of the changes a young priest i Northern England went to the sacristy to vest. The Parish Priest walked in and noticed he had no maniple on. He said to him "no maniple no Mass."
Incidentally a maniple is a Roman hanky. google it!
Well isn't that amazing - a little hanky on the arm. So there may be no liturgical connection whatsoever with this vestment. It was something that grew due to a runny nose. That's really how it came to be there and I thought it was of great liturgical signifcance. Let's hope that the inner sanctity of the priest will always be surpreme and not depend on a pinned-on-piece of cloth. Paul James.
