Overheard

This morning I heard one woman say to another in a stage whisper as I walked by: "Father doesn't have issues. He has a subscription."

Father, are you sure we can't borrow you up here? We wouldn't keep you long: just 30 or 40 years or so!

And why did she say that, pray tell? Because you're doing your job? Because you're faithful to the magisterium? Because you teach what the Church teaches? Because you're a good and God-fearing priest?

Bah! Forget that bitter old shrew! She's the one who's missing out anyway, and she's the one who's going to have to answer for that comment, and whatever nasty little thoughts were lurking behind it. I'll add her to my prayers.

On the bright side, at least you have the consolation of knowing that the vast majority of saints were not appreciated by those whom they served (sometimes to an extreme, which is how we have martyrs!). It's all part of that whole suffering-along-with-Christ thing. Fun stuff.
