Reform of the Reform

This summer’s issue of Inside the Vatican magazine includes an article by Alberto Carosa, Stepping Closer to the Reform of the Reform. In this article the Italian journalist and writer comments on the possible liturgical reform necessary to spark a recovery of the sacrificial dimension of Christian worship, which many traditional Catholics have anticipated since the election of Pope Benedict XVI. One of the hot-button issues is the celebration of Mass with the priest and the faithful facing East.

All these rules and regulations!! Standing, kneeling, Latin or no Latin. And now what direction we face??? Where did we lose sight of what should be happening spiritually at Mass?? The early centuries of the Church were comprised of Mass celebrated in peoples' homes - and the Church subsequently flourished. Yes, there must be consistency in the Rites and the prayers from a message (and organizational) standpoint, but all this other "clutter" just gets in the way of the celebration. Reverence is important, but not to the point of distraction. Jesus is the Good News -and He comes from every direction.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass must be transcendent in its worship and adoration of God in whatever language or locus it is celebrated.

However, tawdry vesture, banal music, and meaningless gesture achieve little.

We must move beyond ourselves, united with the saints and angels in proclaiming the Good News of the passion, death, resurrection and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, our true and only salvation.
